The report presents a wide body of evidence that explores the challenges and opportunities underpinning the construction skills gap, turning data and forecasts into a clear, accessible view of the whole industry. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has shared updated figures for its New Entrant Support Team (NEST), revealing that, between April and December 2025, NEST supported 4,572 apprenticeship starts, exceeding the 2025-26 final target with three months left to go. This is 1,040 more than in the previous period from April to December 2024, representing a 30% increase.

CITB continues its partnership with Open Doors as part of its commitment around new entrants and bridging the construction skills gap. A career in construction provides lifelong opportunities to learn and higher than average salaries, and people interested in joining the industry are now able to book to attend Open Doors 2026, which returns from Monday 23 to Saturday 28 March.

Sometimes it’s good to catch up with apprentices who are in the middle of their journey to find out what motivates them, what it’s like leading a double life in a workplace and classroom and, of course, their vision of their future.
