The Building Blocks project sits under the Structured Fund, Experiential Learning opportunity. It will deliver a sustainable experiential learning offer for Scotland, which will enable more universities to access the Constructionarium offer.

It will provide an expanded experiential learning offer for Scotland, which includes a static and mobile constructionarium, and will reach a wider range of beneficiaries. It will also provide an increase in the number of school teachers delivering Concrete in the Classroom to help feed into the talent pipeline for the sector.

This will enable more universities to access the Construction Live offer, an increase in the number of universities engaged in Construction Live and an increase in the number of projects available to industry.

This will enable more universities to access the Constructionarium offer and will result in an increase in the number of universities engaged in Constructionarium. The project will also create a new experiential learning scenario that can be shared with wider industry.

The project has three key threads, addressing directly the school, FE and HE sectors.

In partnership with Microsoft, the first thread targeting primary school teachers will use the Minecraft Virtual construction scenario to stimulate and encourage school-age children to consider careers in the built environment. Strong support from Microsoft will lead to UK-wide Minecraft ‘clubs’ creating a nationwide exposure to STEM and the construction industry in particular.

A second thread will establish two fixed site ‘hub’ facilities enabling practical reinforcement  and integration with students’ learning experience.

A third thread will implement a mobile facility to enable cost-effective engagement over a wider geographical area from each hub. Each mobile unit will provide typically three-day events based in FE/HE institutions.

The project will bring together a cross industry partnership to create and direct a unified National Workforce Development programme. It will establish and promote industry wide standards for all roofing disciplines through an "Accredited Roofer" programme that will act as a skills baseline for the sector and that will professionalise the industry.

This contextualised curriculum project will consist of the development of a suite of resources, available online, for the use of teachers, careers advisers and industry ambassadors that raise the profile and desirability of careers in construction and the built environment.

The project will also include the piloting and roll out of these resources in schools.

Commission: Employer led training and employment pathways into construction for ex-offenders. The project will map existing training / employment provision for ex-offenders.

It will develop tailored frameworks encompassing employers, offender management services, training and third sector to detail clear pathways into construction employment. The frameworks will reflect existing skills shortages and upcoming needs across Wales.

The project will enable employers of all sizes to partner with prisons and other services on a longer term basis and help to identify other possible interactions. By the end of the project, participants will have built a coherent framework which takes account of demand, best practice and employer incentives.
