The project will provide training to meet the current skills shortage in plant operation by delivering business skills which will allow micro employers to grow and build capacity for the sector. A programme of training which will be delivered to senior managers and business owners. These skills include: entrepreneurship, business planning, ‘whole life cost’ buying, innovative procurement, risk assessment & control, method statements and compliance.

The project follows successful completion of a Phase 1 CITB funded project, which produced a high quality training resource focusing on working conditions, safety and risk assessment whilst excavating. This is Phase 2, the key objectives of which are to: develop a training film, which will focus on the subject matter of ‘Breaking Ground’, highlighting the dangers of working on the highway, and reviewing the latest H&S legislation. This will serve as a versatile resource that will support blended training.

This project was commissioned to provide empirical evidence of the scale of the skills gap and skills shortage in the profession of the Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW).

The availability of ECoW has not historically been measured nor their competence assessed. As a result, there is concern that skills gaps and potential skills shortages in this area could exist.

The project responds to a need to conduct research into the Plant sector to better understand the number of plant operators, and the degree of entry to – exit from the labour force.

The project will use this research to gain better data which can be used for planning and implementing recruitment and upskilling programmes in both general and specialist areas.

The project will train five staff to CAA (pilots for drones) standard. The purpose of the project is to negate the need for staff to work at extreme height whilst carrying out roof work inspections working at height is high risk. Therefore; we look to reduce staff working at height, thereby negate the risk apportioned to them This project will allow us to increase the number of roof inspections carried out by us. Resulting in upskilled staff and increased work outputs.

The project will address recent significant demand to utilise new technological advances in CNC machinery in Shopfitting, Interior Construction and Wood Machining sectors.

After the project, the skills gap in CNC operation will be reduced as CNC operators are given the skills they need to carry out their work.

The project will expand on previous work completed and will produce a series of Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme booklets

The Silver level will initially be completed(bronze and gold to follow).  

At present there is no way of auditing people's involvement. Therefore this project will deliver a self-certification process online.

After the project these documents will be made available on the STA web site for industry to download and use, helping to standardise skills within the structural timber sector.

The project will develop fire safety information in response to calls for additional measures, following industry failures to meet CDM responsibilities in this area.

A video will be developed on fire safety and hosted on the Structural Timber Association (STA) website.

The project will address the roofing industry training needs by bringing together the main roofing industry stakeholders, the 12 regional roof training groups and 11 major roofing trade associations to develop and roll out a basic competency programme.

The Basic Competency Programme represents manufacturers training derived from the minimum technical competencies and mapped to a Vocational Qualification and National Occupational Standards.

This programme will work with SME Tier 1 contractors to identify ten construction projects which will be delivered incorporating BIM technologies and processes across the supply chain.

It will develop and deliver a baseline maturity assessment for collaborative working and BIM, identify the skills and training required to deliver a live BIM project; creating the technical and cultural environment to develop, implement and manage a common data environment on the projects, incorporate BIM and Lean principles to ensure effective and efficient project delivery.

After the project, a skills diagnostic will be available for construction employers to discover the BIM maturity of their organisation. The tool will go on to signpost to training, based on Government BIM standards, to address gaps. A leadership programme will be available to undertake BIM transformation in construction businesses. Additional support will be available in best practice documentation. These materials will have been tested through the supply chains of 10 Tier 1 contractors.
