Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship Level 5 & Level 6, (Scotland SQA) Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance

Duration: 24 months, with option to progress for a further 12 months to achieve Level 6

This course covers the essential knowledge, maintenance and repair skills of plant machinery and equipment. Level 5 runs for two years, with an optional additional 12 months to progress to Level 6.

Course content

General knowledge

  • Health and Safety legislations
  • Behaviours in the construction industry.

Level 5 SVQ (two years)

  • Servicing and basic maintenance requirements and repairs
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Power units and fuel systems
  • Tyres and brake systems
  • Transmission systems
  • Undercarriage, steering and suspension
  • Small Plant
  • Bench fitting
  • Welding and cutting
  • Track servicing and repairs.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Communication
  • Planning
  • Safe working practices
  • Being a team player at work.

Level 6 SVQ (additional one year)

  • Diagnose faults using modern diagnostic equipment on the technologically advanced systems found on modern construction equipment and machinery
  • Advanced and modern power units and associated fuels and components
  • Advanced transmission fault diagnostics and repairs
  • Advanced complex hydraulic systems, diagnostics, and repairs
  • Advanced pneumatic systems, diagnostics, and repairs.

Teaching and assessment

On-the-job training alongside college-based training, split between classroom-based theory and practical sessions

College attendance is structured in blocks of 1 to 4 weeks

Assessment:

  • Regular practical tasks and written assignments, with constructive feedback
  • Log of Progression
  • Individual knowledge and practical assessments
  • Professional portfolio aligned with the SVQ qualification.

What you get

  • SQA qualification in Maths, English and ICT
  • Level 6 SVQ in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance.
