This two-year course explores the theory of roof sheeting and wall cladding alongside comprehensive practical experience.

Course content

The course includes:

  • Safe working practices in construction
  • Selecting the quantity and quality of resources for construction operations
  • Preparing roof sheeting, cladding materials and components for installation
  • Applying roof sheeting and cladding to the structural fabric
  • Installing rainwater goods
  • Providing setting out for roof sheeting and cladding
  • Storing resources ready for use
  • Building methods and construction technology.

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Time management
  • Personal organisation
  • Safe use of access equipment
  • Manual handling.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Interpreting information 
  • Risk assessments and method statements 
  • Construction elements 
  • Effective communication 
  • Building information modelling (BIM) 
  • Basic project management 
  • Site communication 
  • Health and safety
  • PREVENT.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks of training over 24 months. This is separated into two-week blocks.

Weeks 1 to 18: Classroom-based theory and practical training, with seven theory and site-based assessments.

Regular assessment by:

  • Written and practical assessments
  • Verbal questioning and presentation
  • Multiple-choice testing
  • College and site-based activity journals

SVQ in Cladding Occupations (Construction) at SCQF Level 5

Academic requirements:

Entry National 4s Maths and English

You’ll also need to complete a skills learning exercise to help us assess your suitability for this course. Additional tests at college are possible.

General requirements:

  1. Good level of physical fitness. This course includes strenuous physical activity.
  2. Comfortable working at heights.
  3. Comfortable wearing PPE/RPE.
  4. Able to work to deadlines.
  5. Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.
