Roof Slater and Tiler apprenticeship

This two-year course offers training in roof slating and tiling occupation alongside comprehensive practical experience.
Course content
The course includes:
- Safe working practices in construction
- Selecting the quantity and quality of resources for construction operations
- Preparing roof slating, tiling, materials and components for installation
- Applying roof slates and interlocking tiles to the structural fabric
- Providing setting out for roof battens, slates and tiles
- Storing resources ready for use
- Building methods and construction technology.
You’ll also study personal skills. These include:
- Maths
- English
- Drug and alcohol awareness
- Time management
- Personal development
- Careers information and guidance
- Safe use of access equipment
- Manual handling.
Knowledge, skills and behaviours
- Interpreting information
- Risk assessments and method statements

Teaching and assessment
18 weeks of training over 24 months. Teaching will be split into two-week blocks at NCC East.
Week 1: College induction and Health and Safety Module 1
Weeks 2 to 18: Classroom-based theory and practical training at college
Gateway: Portfolio preparation
External assessment at NCC East
Regular assessment by:
- Written and practical assessments
- Verbal questioning and presentation
- Multiple-choice testing
- College and site-based activity journals

Academic requirements:
While the need to study maths and English qualifications isn’t required for learners aged 19 and over, we believe these skills are important for success. That’s why we include industry-relevant maths and English lessons as part of our courses.
To make sure learners have the right skills to help them successfully achieve their apprenticeship programme, we ask for the below:
Level 2 Apprenticeship:
- Maths and English GCSE grades 3-9 (the same as old grades D-A), or equivalent
If you don't have these grades, contact our team. We can help you explore your options.
General requirements:
- Good level of physical fitness. This course includes strenuous physical activity.
- Comfortable working at heights.
- Comfortable wearing PPE/RPE.
- Able to work to deadlines.
- Valid form of ID. See accepted forms of ID.

Skills England (DfE) applicants are only guaranteed full funding if this is their first training scheme and they are aged between 16 and 18.
