Scottish Plant Operative Apprenticeship - Construction

You’ll learn how to check, prepare and safely operate plant machines used in construction.

Passing this course could help you progress to lead operator, supervisor or manager.

Course content

The course includes:

  • Slinger/Signaller (non CPCS)
  • Forward Tipping Dumper
  • Telescopic Handler (including suspended loads)
  • Ride on Roller
  • 360 Excavator

You’ll also study personal skills. These include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Time management
  • Teamwork and independent working
  • Attitude and discipline
  • Personal organisation
  • First aid

Knowledge, skills and behaviours

  • Safe operation of plant machinery
  • Maintenance of plant machinery
  • Health, safety and welfare
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Interpreting information
  • Effective communication
  • Customer relationships.

Teaching and assessment

At least 13 weeks of training delivered in 15 months or more. College training is split into three blocks.

Block 1: 5 weeks

Block 2: 4 weeks

Block 3: 4 weeks

Regular assessment by:

  • A range of different methods, including written and practical assessments
  • College and site-based activity journals

What you get

  • Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) Trained Operator Card (red card) for all CPCS categories achieved
  • 360 Excavator category converted to a CPCS Competent Operator Card (blue card)
  • Other categories can be added at an additional cost to the employer. Please contact us to learn more.

Academic requirements:

To help us assess your suitability for this course, you’ll need to

  • Complete a skills learning exercise
  • Complete a questionnaire
  • Take part in an informal discussion
  • Possibly attend college for further tests

There are no formal academic requirements for this course.

  1. Good communication skills.
