Queen praises work of Welsh apprenticeship scheme Cyfle at special ceremony

""West Wales-based construction apprenticeship scheme Cyfle took centre stage at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 11th July to celebrate winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation, with Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh attending the special event.

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Welsh Government-supported shared apprenticeship initiative scooped the Innovation award. The ground-breaking scheme sees Cyfle apprentices work with various employers over their apprenticeship.

The Queen’s Award is the most prestigious for businesses in the UK. It is given to companies or individuals who are outstanding in their field and is split across four categories: International Trade, Innovation, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility.

Anthony Rees, Area Manager for Cyfle Building Skills, who attended the ceremony, said: “This year Cyfle celebrates 10 years since we first developed the scheme, with it becoming known as Cyfle in 2013. What better way to celebrate this milestone birthday than gaining recognition from the Queen herself?

“We are incredibly proud of the work we do, which has seen many trainees being able to complete an apprenticeship and made it possible for construction business in Wales to be able to take on an apprentice. Winning the award and going to Buckingham Palace was a proud moment and one that I won’t forget.”

Donna Griffiths, Partnerships Manager, for CITB Wales, said: “Cyfle has made a huge impact on apprenticeships here in Wales. It has been able to support employers, who may not be in a position to offer the range of work required to successfully complete an apprenticeship. The shared approach has meant that employers have been able to benefit and discover just how vital apprentices are on a project and at the same time apprentices get the opportunity to experience a variety of construction projects. The Cyfle team are incredibly dedicated to the employers and apprentices that it supports and I’m delighted that this work has been recognised at such a prestigious ceremony.”
