Worktop and Counter Refurbishment

Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide learners with a practical introduction to the refurbishment and renewal of worktops and counters in kitchens and other areas, on different substrates using a selection of resins and compounds

Duration

12 hours

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide learners with a practical introduction to the refurbishment and renewal of worktops and counters in kitchens and other areas, on different substrates using a selection of resins and compounds

Scope:

  • Reasons for resurfacing worktops
  • PPE (Personal Protection Equipment)
  • Job site protection
  • Using correct fillers for defects
  • Knowing the correct primers for a range of surfaces
  • Preparation and priming of surfaces
  • Understanding epoxy products
  • Epoxy and colorants mixing ratios
  • Epoxy designs and application techniques
  • Top coat options and applications
  • Know what the common problems and solutions are
  • Clean up and waste disposal

Learner pre-requisites

There are no learner pre-requisites as part of this standard

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation

The learning environment, class size and learner/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)

This standard is predominantly practical training

This standard is considered to be set at an entry level

Assessment

Formally Assessed

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Standard Classification

Lifetime (Please note standards using this classification will only be grant aided once per learner)

Learning outcomes

The learner will be able to:

Understand the benefits of worktop refurbishment

Delivery guidance:

  • explain the benefits of resurfacing worktops, counters and hard surfaces including:
    • the financial cost implications of replacing over new
    • the environmental and sustainability implications
    • the final coating, sheens, food safety and durability
    • ease for future repairs

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to list 3 benefits of worktop refurbishment

Assessment specification:

  • a learner will be assessed using a workbook containing questions. This will be the case for all assessment. Practical assessment will also be tracked in the workbook

Understand the PPE requirements for using resin

Delivery guidance:

  • the following PPE is recommended when using epoxy resin:
    • face mask
    • safety glasses
    • vinyl gloves
    • overalls

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will need to name 2 items of PPE

Mask the work area and protect all surfaces from the application process including walls and floors

Delivery guidance:

  • a learner will mask off various areas including:
  • the kitchen unit itself
  • the floor
  • adjacent wall areas

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will carry out a practical task masking all the above areas

Identify the correct filler for repairing the worktop

Delivery guidance:

  • a learner will select a 2-pack wood filler

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to name 1 appropriate filler

Be able to prepare and apply the correct primer to the worktop surface

Delivery guidance:

  • explain the preparation and primer for a range of surfaces including:
    • wood
    • granite
    • marble
    • corian

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to explain how 1 surface is prepared, and which primer would be used

Be able to use a range of epoxy resin products

Delivery guidance:

  • Products include:
    • base resin
    • hardener
    • liquid colourants
    • powder colourants

Assessment criteria:

  • a leaner will know what when colourants should be added to the resin
  • a learner will know 2 colourants that could be used

Identify what the mixing ratios for epoxy resin base and hardener are and also be able to correctly mix them

Delivery guidance:

  • a learner will be shown a number of resin products and be able to look up the correct mixing ratio and mix accordingly

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to state the mixing ratio of a selected resin

Apply a number of resin designs based on a simple specification

Delivery guidance:

  • a learner will be able to produce 3 designs using 3 different colourways.

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to produce a worktop in a selected design.

Know how to apply an epoxy resin top coat.

Delivery guidance:

  • a learner will understand the advantages of applying a top coat including:
    • more durable
    • be able to recover any defects
    • be able to add more design to the resin to give more depth.

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to state 1 reason for using a top coat

Know what the common application mistakes are and how they are rectified

Delivery guidance:

  • mistakes and solutions are as follows:
  • resin has pitting – sand down and apply a top coat
  • resin has runs along the bottom edge of the surface – sand these back to smooth
  • the design has too much colour – dull down the design with another coat of resin

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will be able to name 1 problem and state the solution

Demask and leave the work area clean and tidy

Assessment criteria:

  • a learner will demask their work area and tidy up correctly
