Logbooks

The role of the logbook is to record life-long learning and evidence towards the renewal of your Blue Competent Operator card.

Use of the logbook is voluntary and it is the cheapest option to use when renewing a competent operator card. There are also other routes you can follow to renew.

CPCS recommends that you use the logbook to keep a record of all the operating activities, testing, training and employment that you undertake.

A logbook is automatically sent out when your first competent operator (blue) card is issued. It is sent to your home address.

If you renew your Blue Competent Operator card using the logbook route, then you should have the logbook validated prior to submitting your application. This must be performed by a CPCS Approved Company Validator. They will review the logbook prior to completing the Independent Declaration section of the F1/3 Application to Renew a CPCS Competent Operator Card.

The logbook is divided into three sections. The first four sections provide records for different aspects of your career to be logged and endorsed:

  • Section 1: Operating Experience Record
  • Section 2: Employment Record
  • Section 3: Further information

If you wish to use the logbook to prove ongoing operating experience at the point of renewal, the following steps must be followed:

  • Record your operating
  • Entries must be endorsed.
  • Minimum of 300 hours should be recorded for each category (pro-rata)
  • Validated by a company approved Validator prior to Renewal application being submitted.

You can download additional pages for your logbook free of charge from the Support Material section, or further pages can be purchased by contacting our CPCS helpline on 0844 815 7274.
