This project will seek to design and develop a program of activities that would enable a suitable transition into the construction industry for the target group (Service leavers and Full-time Learners).

The program will involve training, placement, mentoring and support for the target groups to successful transition into employment into the construction industry.  One of the unique features of this project will be the development of online resources that will be freely available to construction industry companies designed to equip companies to attract and retain employees from the target group.

The online resources will also be available to FE and other training organisations to help them deliver suitable soft-skills content to their students. The project will provide a template that will make it easier for construction industry companies to directly employ the target group and support them without the involvement of third parties. As such, one of the key project deliverables will be the development of online resources to be freely available on a dedicated website.

Onsite Assessment Infrastructure for Apprentices in Scotland

This project will address an identified industry need to recruit and train 100 FTE ne, quality assessors to enable the efficient delivery of assessments for apprenticeships in Scotland.

Working in partnership with 23 of Scotland’s construction colleges, government agencies and private training providers, a coordinated approach in recruiting 100 FTE assessors will be managed and implemented by ESP applying a good geographical spread across CITB’s 7 regions.

Project summary:

“Passport to Construction” will be delivered across the six counties of North Wales.

Each programme will run for 6 weeks delivering work readiness and confidence building as well as developing practical construction related skills including sites visits and work placements on various construction sites across North Wales.  

There will be a tailored qualification called “Passport to Construction” which will be an Open College Network qualification. In addition, programmes will provide CSCS revision, mock tests and actual test.

Participants will gain practical “try a trade” work experience alongside work buddies that the project partners have trained from construction companies to provide work experience.

The 6 weeks will culminate in CV writing and job search sessions followed by a final day of mock interviews with industry bosses, a "Meet the Boss" session, an inspirational speaker and a celebration of their success.  

All beneficiaries will leave the programme with a personal development plan and clear next steps tailored to them.

Women Construct Wales (Pathways into Construction - women)

This project will focus on breaking down barriers to women entering the sector.

It will provide 9 renovation projects over 3 years for 72 women to gain and acquire skills in building renovation.

Skill acquisition will focus on

  • plastering and rendering
  • flooring
  • tiling
  • painting and decorating
  • kitchen and bathroom fitting
  • gardening
  • carpentry.

Pathway includes pre-employment training, construction, H&S , First Aid qualifications and CSCS card progression. Project will also supply literacy and numeracy support for those in need of this.

Women into Construction - New Directions (Pathways into Construction - NEETs, long term unemployed, women and full time learners)

Project summary:

The project will pilot employer engagement activities and individual support to potential new entrant apprentices with a priority focus on under-represented groups.  Apprentices will be connected to construction employers and offered workplace site visits, one-to-one interactions and work experience. 

The aim of the pilot is to develop new resources and guidance to support employers to recruit and inspire a diverse range of new entrants into the industry via the Higher Level Apprenticeship route.

This contextualised curriculum project will consist of the development of a suite of resources, available online, for the use of teachers, careers advisers and industry ambassadors that raise the profile and desirability of careers in construction and the built environment.

Commission: Employer led training and employment pathways into construction for ex-offenders. The project will create a Scotland-wide sustainable framework of employer led learning and employment pathways into construction for ex-offenders. The project will enable employers of all sizes to partner with prisons and other services on a longer term basis and help to identify other possible interactions. By the end of the project, participants will have built a coherent framework which takes account of demand, best practice and employer incentives.

Commission: Construction contextualised curriculum to improve the appeal of working in construction. The aim of the project is to develop a pan Wales construction curriculum resource that facilitates and standardises an end to end offer, which is currently only undertaken by construction companies on an ad hoc basis. 

The project will support teachers and careers advisors to contextualise the curriculum by developing curriculum support and guidance and will produce resources to support C&BE Welsh Baccalaureate challenges.
