This shorter course for people who already have experience of slinging and signalling and need a formal qualification.
You’ll learn to safely access load size and weight, choose and maintain lifting gear and communicate with crane operators.
Course duration will be advised at booking based on your experience. Beginners with little-to-no experience should take our full course instead.
Passing the course will grant you a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card).
Course content
The course includes:
- Assess the size and weight of loads
- Clear communication with crane operators
- How to safely choose, attach and detach appropriate lifting tackle
- Checking, maintaining and storing lifting accessories.

Entry requirements
- CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test passed within two years of course start date.

Theory questions
Study the following before starting training on this course:
- Name the principal components of basic lifting accessories and explain their purpose
- How to carry out pre-use inspections of basic lifting accessories
- How to prepare and ready the area of operation and maintain an exclusion zone
- Explain the actions required for hazards, including underground and overhead services
- How to confirm methods of communication with the crane operator
- How to undertake and sling various loads including unbalanced, balanced and loose and including double wrapping scaffold tubes with chains
- How to deliver signals to the crane operator that conform to the agreed code and use different forms of communication i.e. radios and relay to give signals
- How to position and place loads, identify weights and centres of gravity, whilst ensuring load security
- How to appropriately store lifting accessories and carry out any required actions
