Construction apprenticeships are gateway to a serious career

With A-Level results in England and Wales due for publication today, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is urging school leavers to consider the benefits an apprenticeship in construction when considering their next steps.

Recent research from CITB suggests the construction industry needs to recruit over 120,000 new apprentices in the next five years.

Steve Radley, Director of Policy & Partnerships at CITB, said: “A construction apprenticeship is a great way into an exciting and rewarding career. With recent research suggesting 200,000 new jobs over the next five years, it couldn’t be a better time to get into the industry.

“As a construction apprentice your training is paid for, you are paid a wage and, once qualified, the jobs market is good. You also have a broad range of options, including going into higher education at a later stage.

“Construction in the 21st century requires a diverse range of technical, design and management skills. An apprenticeship in the industry is a high-quality vocational route that opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities, including architect, surveyor, civil engineer and structural engineer.

“With determination and hard work there are plenty of opportunities to move up the career ladder in the construction industry and the earnings potential is substantial.  Join the industry now and ultimately you could be the head of a multimillion pound company operating across the globe.”

The 120,000 apprentices needed over the next five years, can be broken down into the below regions (Possible apprentice places 2014 - 2018):

  • Scotland - 17,800
  • Wales - 11,850
  • Greater London - 6,150
  • South East - 7,500
  • South West - 13,650
  • West Midlands - 2,100
  • East Midlands -  4,750
  • Yorkshire and Humber - 12,500
  • North West - 15,500
  • North East - 9,550
  • East of England - 20,500
