Produce sawn stone products introduction

Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following scope: identify different types of stone, identify the type being used and select the most appropriate piece available, check for and identify faults within the stone, mark out and cut a six-sided stone block to a specification using manually operated equipment, reference the cut stone block, apply a finish to the stone block, stack, store and protect a sawn stone product

Competence Framework / Occupation

Heritage (stonemasonry)

Duration

6 hours

Purpose/ scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following:

Scope:

  • identify different types of stone
  • identify the type being used and select the most appropriate piece available
  • check for and identify faults within the stone
  • mark out and cut a six-sided stone block to a specification using manually operated equipment
  • reference the cut stone block
  • apply a finish to the stone block
  • stack, store and protect a sawn stone product

Learner pre-requisites

There are no learner pre-requisites as part of this standard

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation

The learning environment, class size and learner/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)

This standard is predominantly practical training

This standard is considered to be set at an entry level

Assessment

Informally Assessed

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Standard Classification

Lifetime (Please note standards using this classification will only be grant aided once per user)

Working Group Approval date

December 2024

Review cycle

On request or 60 months (5 years) from approval date.

Learning outcomes

The learner will be able to:

Set up and safely produce and a sawn stone six-sided block which is square and true to a given specification and tolerance

Delivery Guidance.

The learner must know how to:

  • select and use PPE and RPE as per the RAMS
  • read and understand the specification
  • identify the tolerances
  • differentiate between stone types
  • identify the compatibility of materials with machinery
  • check stones for faults and correct bedding planes
  • select the most appropriately sized stone to ensure that wastage is minimised
  • safely manually handle the stone block or use lifting aids
  • mark out the cut lines and confirm with the specification
  • identify the difference between primary and secondary sawing processes
  • prepare and set up the sawing machinery
  • secure stones prior to, and during, the sawing process
  • complete square, true and parallel 90° cuts
  • check sawn stone for square and true, and to tolerances
  • reference the cut stone block
  • clean the equipment after use

Assessment Criteria.

The tutor must be satisfied that the learner knows how to set up and safely produce and a sawn stone six-sided block which is square and true to a given specification and tolerance

Apply a basic finish, stack, store and protect sawn stone products

Delivery Guidance.

The learner must know how to produce one of the following finishes:

  • split face
  • pitched face
  • fine rubbed

The learner must know how to select and use a range of basic tools and equipment to produce a sawn block and basic finish

The learner must know how to move, stack, store and protect finished stone products in line with safety practices

Assessment Criteria:

The tutor must be satisfied that the learner knows how to apply a basic finish, stack, store and protect a sawn stone product in line with the delivery guidance below

Demonstrate the ability to set up and safely produce a sawn stone six-sided block which is square and true to a given specification and tolerance.

Delivery Guidance.

The size of the finished block is at the discretion of the centre however 215 x 100 x 440 (mm) is recommended as a minimum.

The learner must be able to:

  • select and use PPE and RPE as per the RAMS
  • identify the type of stone being used
  • select the most appropriately sized stone to ensure that wastage is minimised
  • check the stone for faults
  • safely manually handle the stone block or use lifting aids
  • mark out the cut lines and confirm with the specification
  • carry out pre-cut safety checks
  • complete a series of cuts to produce the block
  • reference the cut stone block
  • clean the equipment after use

The basic tools and equipment required are:

  • manually operated secondary sawing equipment

The following are considered to be basic cutting methods and techniques:

  • 90° cuts
  • square
  • true
  • parallel

Assessment Criteria:
