Plant training grants

We pay grants for the achievement of approved plant training courses and qualifications.

The Plant training grants is paid out for the achievement of approved plant training courses and qualifications which include:

  • specific plant-related vocational qualification (VQ) units
  • the theory and practical elements of standard or advanced technical tests for approved plant card schemes.

Note: the published rates for plant training and testing for 2018/19 are subject to a review with industry over the coming months. Over this period, CITB will be engaged with employers and federations to develop a grants model for the plant sector.

Which courses are eligible?

A list of plant courses which are eligible for this grant can be found using the links below:

Please be aware that there are some courses for which a full standard is being developed. 

Approved courses will be provided by CITB Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) who will list what courses they offer in the Construction Training Directory.

We pay approved plant NVQs and SVQs through the Short period qualifications grant route. 

Approved plant training courses are supported under Short duration course achievements grant.

Who can claim?

You can claim if you’re registered with us and meet our general grant scheme eligibility requirements.

These grants support directly employed Pay As You Earn (PAYE) staff and all subcontractors.

How much is it?

Specific plant-related VQs are £600 each, up to a maximum of two achievements at each level, per individual, per lifetime

Additional specific plant-related VQ units are £300 each, up to a maximum of 3 per person per lifetime.

Theory elements in technical tests are £60 each, up to a maximum of 2 per person per grants scheme year.

Practical elements in technical tests are set at different rates depending on the category of plant, up to a maximum of 2 per person per grants scheme year:

  • Rate 1: £190
  • Rate 2: £240
  • Rate 3: £410

How to claim

You should make your claim through your CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) in the Construction Training Directory, supplying them with the relevant details of the person taking the qualification.

When the person has completed the course, the provider will update the Construction Training Register and you should automatically receive the grant payment.

Please contact our customer services team if your payment is late.

If your training provider has not yet completed the CITB ATO approval process, you will need to claim through CITB Online within 20 weeks of completing the course.

Grants are only paid by bank transfer. If we do not hold your current bank details, please complete and submit the secure online Bacs Direct Credit Authorisation Form to receive grant payments.
