This apprenticeship course is for people who want to gain a vocational qualification in civil engineering practices and concepts, while gaining industry experience.

You’ll enjoy training in a host of fundamental civil engineering principles, looking at a range of professional practices and gaining practical insight into a variety of industry practices. If your aspiration is to progress to university, you’ll also gain a recognised Level 3 academic qualification that will aid in your progression.

Course content

The course covers practical and theoretical principles in:

  • Surveying
  • Levelling and setting out
  • Civil engineering principles
  • Structural mechanics
  • Project and site management
  • Highway construction
  • Health and safety management
  • Computer-aided design (CAD)
  • Building information modelling (BIM).

You’ll undertake a Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering (BTEC) as part of this qualification, covering theory, practice and principles in:

  • Construction
  • Construction design
  • Construction technology
  • Health and safety in construction
  • Management of a construction project
  • Site engineering in construction
  • Further mathematics for construction
  • Construction in civil engineering
  • Surveying
  • Structural mechanics.

In conjunction with this qualification, you’ll also undertake bespoke training designed by the NCC that will expand your knowledge, awareness and skills within the civil engineering industry. This additional content will include:

  • A study of advanced civil engineering operations, including bridges, tunnels, rail, hydraulic structures and marine structures
  • A study of highway design, construction and maintenance
  • Further setting out skills with a greater level of complexity, focusing on highway procedures.

You’ll also focus on personal skills in:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Fairness, inclusion and respect
  • Time management
  • Personal organisation
  • Study skills
  • Reporting skills.

Teaching and assessment

30 weeks’ training delivered over 32 months, typically delivered in 4-week blocks.

Qualifications you gain

  • Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician
  • Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering  

Methods of assessment

The majority of the qualification will be assessed in accordance with the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering, which will include external examinations, project-based assessment and assignment production.

You’ll be regularly assessed using a range of methods, including written assessment, practical assessment, verbal questioning and presentation, and multiple-choice testing. You’ll also be required to complete college-based and site-based activity journals. You’ll be given clear, direct and constructive feedback to enable to progress to a successful completion.

Mandatory entry requirements


L2 English and Mathematics.

A Level 2 qualification in a Construction- or Civil Engineering-related subject.

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grades A to C, ideally including mathematics, English and science.

To help us assess your suitability for the course, you'll need to complete a skills learning exercise and possibly attend college for further testing.
