Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills to use fire rated sealants.

CITB has developed this standard in discussion with industry.

Duration

Minimum 2 days of 6 learning hours per day.

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills to use fire rated sealants.

The scope of this standard covers:

  • safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • fire protection times
  • joint preparation
  • selecting and using packers
  • selecting and using sealants
  • applying sealants
  • tooling
  • types of surfaces
  • mixing, priming, masking, storing & curing.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

  • operative and craft
  • supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

The candidate pre-requisite for this course is the successful completion of the following courses:-

BS8000 part 16 code of practice
Introduction to sealant application, gunning techniques
Introduction to sealant application, preparation
Introduction to sealant application, tooling techniques.

Instruction/Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • achieved the NVQ Level 2 Certificate in joint sealant application
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • workshop.

 This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

 This standard is considered to be set at an advanced level.

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete a formal practical and knowledge assessment

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

No renewal/refreshment requirements - There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

The candidate will be able to:

  • Select and fit appropriate PPE

  • Explain the importance of the correct sealant type, backing material type and joint size to depth ratio to achieve the required fire protection time

  • Demonstrate joint preparation

  • Select the correct packer:
    • type
      size.

  • Apply packing depths

  • Select the correct sealant type

  • Apply sealant to a range of locations/surfaces:
    • depth
    • finish.

  • Apply tooling techniques

  • Explain safety measures and safe working environments

  • Interpret COSHH information from manufacturer spec. sheets, and other sources of information to assist in choice of PPE, emergency actions in case of accident and environmentally safe means of disposal

  • Identify the importance of method statements & risk assessment in the safety process

  • Read and interpret job sheets to identify correct tools and materials, and will understand company stock record systems

  • List appropriate PPE

  • Describe packer types:
    • mineral wool
    • ceramic
    • foam
    • flat
    • round
    • spray.

  • Explain sealant types including the following:
    • uses and applications
    • protection times
    • coverage
    • technical data
    • advantages
    • colours
    • method of use.

  • Describe the types of surfaces:
    • porous
    • non-porous.

  • Explain the following:
    • mixing
    • priming
    • masking
    • storing
    • curing
    • tools
    • removal of debris
    • strength
    • appearance
    • chemical resistance.

  • Interpret information from specification sheets as to:
    • material active life
    • curing times
    • technical data (including any relevant H&S information and emergency procedures in case of accidental spillage, inhalation or ingestion)
    • expiry dates – their significance
    • method of use – including any PPE
    • mixing techniques – including whether ventilated areas are required and why)
    • masking
    • storage requirements.
