Overview

This course is designed to teach decorators about different spraying systems that are on the market so that they understand how they relate to each other and which system is most suited for their business.

Duration

Minimum 1 day of 6 learning hours

Purpose/scope

Purpose: This course is designed to teach decorators about different spraying systems that are on the market so that they understand how they relate to each other and which system is most suited for their business.

Scope:

  • The student will know what different spraying systems are on the market, including conventional, HVLP and airless.
  • The student will know the advantages and disadvantages of each system and what type of work each system is ideally suited for.
  • How to use the controls on the HVLP spray gun to alter your fan size and fluid amount to gain the perfect finish and a range of surfaces.
  • How to use the controls on the conventional spray gun with a compressor to alter your fan size and fluid amount.
  • Understanding paint technology and how to prepare paint so that it can be sprayed using a HVLP system. How different brands vary and looking at product data sheets.
  • Understanding the compressor and how to set the correct pressure
  • How to set up and use the pressure pot system on both HVLP and compressor systems.
  • How to spray a range of surfaces using the HVLP spray gun.
  • Demonstrate an airless system so that the students can see the difference in speed and finish.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft.

Delegate pre-requisites

There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate to trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • Workshop
  • courses mapped to this standard cannot be delivered remotely as there are practical activities

This standard is considered to contain 51 per cent or more practical learning.

This standard is considered to be set at an introductory level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the delegate has achieved all of the learning outcomes and achieved the end of course assessment.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There is no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

The delegate will be able to:

  • The student will understand paint technology and how to prepare paint so that it ca be sprayed using HVLP.
  • The student will understand the compressor set up and how to set the correct pressure.
  • The student will be able to set up the pressure pot system with both the HVLP and conventional systems.
  • The student will be able to spray a range of surfaces using the HVLP or conventional system.
  • The student will understand the difference in speed and finish produced by an airless sprayer.
  • The student will know about health and safety aspects of all the spraying systems.
