Overview

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge and/or skills to support the following scope.

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge and/or skills to support the following:

Scope:

  • select the correct paint system
  • understand the differences between water-based systems and solvent based system.
  • read and understand a technical data sheet
  • develop a paint testing system and record outcomes
  • identify the different types of water-based paint offered by various manufacturers
  • learn and understand the different thinning, drying, and curing times
  • calculate wet and dry film thickness from stated volume solids
  • apply a range of water-based paints to a number of substrates to achieve a quality finish
  • communicate water-based finishes terminology effectively to customers

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision

Delegates pre-requisites

There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard, however a basic knowledge of paint terminology and techniques would be beneficial.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The learning environment, class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)

This standard is predominantly practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at a basic level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

short answer questions

  • portfolio / workbook of workplace products / outputs
  • practical assessment

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refresher requirements for this standard.

The delegate will be able to:

Select the correct choice of paint for any given project requirement

Delivery guidance:

  • select at least 3 different substrates and 2 different finishes

Assessment criteria:

  • list substrates from which 3 can be selected
  • list finishes from which 2 can be selected
  • practical demonstration of 3 substrates
  • practical demonstration of 2 finishes

Relate information regarding the benefits of water-based finishes over traditional solvent paints

Delivery guidance:

  • water borne and solvent borne

Assessment criteria:

  • name two advantages of a water- based paint over a solvent-based paint

Identify the main paint manufacturers and their water-based product range

Delivery guidance:

  • select 3 paint manufacturers and look at their core water-based paint range
  • compare 3 different manufacturers paint range

Assessment criteria:

  • understand the differences between manufacturers paint ranges
  • demonstrate the differences between manufacturers paint ranges

Know and understand the recommended thinning limits, drying time and curing times for a range of water-based paints, using the manufacturers data sheet.

Delivery guidance:

  • select 3 water-based coatings and discuss recommended thinning, drying and curing times
  • discuss time allowances for recoating
  • use 3 water-based coatings to thin, then apply and see how they dry using the data sheet as guidance

Assessment criteria:

  • understanding of thinning limits, drying and curing times
  • demonstrate knowledge on thinning, drying and curing times of the selected 3 water-based coatings on 3 different surfaces

Calculate wet and dry film thickness from stated volume solids.

Delivery guidance:

  • look at different coatings and their film thickness

Assessment criteria:

  • be able to calculate the thicknesses of wet and dry film
  • demonstrate the differences between wet and dry film thickness

Extract data from a technical data sheet

Delivery guidance:

  • discuss technical data sheets for several commonly used products from a range of paint manufacturers, discuss at least 3 different product types and 3 different manufacturers

Assessment criteria:

  • use data from the Data sheet to demonstrate knowledge

Create a paint testing program.

Delivery guidance:

  • discuss how to create a paint test program
  • explain how to record results from the paint test

Assessment criteria:

  • produce a record sheet containing your paint testing program
  • carry out paint test program

Communicate water-based finishes terminology effectively to customers

Delivery guidance:

  • discuss how to change technical water-based finishes technical language into plain English

Assessment criteria:

  • convert a selection of water-based finishes terms into plain English
